About Us - CHRIS Program

The 1986 Handicap Prevention Act (Chapter 411, F. S.) mandated the establishment of local registries and information sharing systems on the pre-kindergarten at-risk and handicapped population. The Children's Registry and Information System (CHRIS) project maintains the computerized implementation of those local registries and serves as the tracking, reporting, and planning tool for Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Part B and Child Find activities.  The CHRIS Program is used in every Florida Diagnostic and Learning Resources System (FDLRS) center to register children from birth to age 7 for whom special services may be needed.

In addition to maintaining a registry of children, CHRIS provides database management and reporting tools that support the case management process. CHRIS was built on the assumption that data used for case management will be valid and reliable because it is actively being used rather than just archived. Once a child is entered into the system, it is possible to record important milestones in the process of developing an Individual Educational Program (IEP) or a Family Service Plan (FSP). The CHRIS system enables the maintenance of information central to the identification of children with disabilities, the documentation of assessment procedures and results, and recommendations for action, staffing, and service coordination. Monitoring of overall program activities and outcomes can be conducted using these data. Service coordination and projections of services needed may also be obtained from the case management data using the suite of reports designed for Exceptional Student Education (ESE) directors.

Upgrades to the CHRIS software program are developed regularly in response to changes in state legislation, input from TAWG, input from CHRIS users, and improvements in the development software (FileMaker Pro).
